MIYC February 2022 Newsletter
February 2022 Newsletter
It’s a new era at the Madeline Island Yacht Club.
At the end of January, Mary Hauser — for more than 30 years the stalwart heart of the club’s retail operation — announced her retirement. Word went out that her position was available. The club board, not wanting to even momentarily leave vacant such an important position, interviewed a number of talented candidates who stepped forward. And, on Feb. 13, the club enthusiastically hired Mazie Ashe, then the island Post Mistress, to become the new Store Manager.
And thus began the new era in the management of MIYC. For a generation, Leroy Dahlin ran the shop; Cile Naumann oversaw accounting and business; and Mary managed the store, including the busy fuel dock. That amazing professional stability could not of course last forever. And in the last few seasons the club has been fortunate to have Alan Hardie move into Leroy’s office, Elena Erickson replace Cile, and now Mazie take over for Mary. More amazing people for our amazing place.
By the way, all you need to know about Mary’s talents and experience came last spring when one of the club’s three aging fuel tanks failed an inspection. In the midst of pre-season frenzy, Mary — with her determined gaze over the top of her glasses — elegantly juggled the reorganized fuels, and eventually secured of the failed tank to state specifications, with minimal impact on members’ boats. Congratulations to Mary.
The season is upon us
All members should now have, or will have shortly, their Slip Agreement and Launch Request Form for the 2022 season.
Here are the important dates:
Slip agreements must be returned to MIYC by March 31.
Slip fees are due by April 30 (minus any deposit).
The season officially commences May 1.
It is worth noting that requested launch dates are first-come, first-served; so it is rarely beneficial to dawdle on the return of Launch Request Forms. And please as soon as possible contact Alan in the shop if you have boat projects in mind that are outside the scope of standard launch prep and work.
Meantime, the crew in the store is methodically unpacking shipments of clothing, parts, and equipment (while Mary trains Mazie), and the shop staff is working to wrap up winter projects to make way for summer work.
A special seasonal preparation note: The Madeline Island Yacht Club Board voted auspiciously this winter to add beer and wine to the marina store. Logistical preparations are underway. Watch for it. Cheers.
