Launch Report

Boats at the Madeline Island Yacht Club this mild spring are now sliding into the water like ducklings into a pond. But as of this date, we must report, only about half of members and other resident owners have actually scheduled a launch.

Launch request forms — the precursor to any and all launches — are of course available on the marina’s website and in the store or click here to fill & submit: https://na2.documents.adobe.com/public/esignWidget?wid=CBFCIBAA3AAABLblqZhCCsJIVuPdmQfa5qKHfIYnpq9my2HalY-irEfG3jXHnjy-hmA0Ebc8be14i9W2LNcY*

The lake, meanwhile, is down — maybe seven inches down from last summer, according to federal officials. This means Lake Superior’s water levels are now at about historic average levels (actually about an inch low), and the marina will have to make sure this summer that smaller boats don’t slide under docks, especially C Dock and the fuel dock.

Board Work

The club’s board of directors is this spring completing work over the winter planning and paying for an array of maintenance and infrastructure projects. Short term, this means the big fuel tanks replacement project (the digging will begin this fall), as well as significant electrical maintenance and upgrades on B, C, and D docks, and a successor for the dilapidated boneyard fence.

All that’s approaching $1 million, which the board plans to cover with savings, a federal grant, and general cash flow.

More work remains — the building’s roof; the deteriorating asphalt around the launch area; general dock maintenance, especially D Dock; more electrical maintenance and upgrades; and on. That work could cost another $1 million, so the board is assembling an equitable plan to both pay for this current backlog of projects and also avoid backlogs in the future. The board this winter, for the first time, committed to create a reserve fund as part of this work.

Events!

The annual meeting is scheduled for Saturday, June 29. Brunch is at 9 am; the meeting will follow at 10:30 am, with a review of club news and results of the election of board members and officers.

The annual Memorial Day weekend Commodore’s Reception — this year, 4 to 7 pm on May 25 — will celebrate Stan Cory, the club’s late, great, long-time Commodore. We will unveil a memorial bench to honor Stan’s legacy.
